The Mental Health Council of Australia reported that almost half of the total population experience a mental health disorder at some point in the lifetime. The estimated health costs associated with mental illness is at 20 billion dollars, as poor mental health is linked with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
In Exercise & Sport Science Australia’s position statement on Exercise & Mental Health, they describe that “There is a strong relationship between physical activity and mental health. Cross-sectional studies show that regular physical activity is associated with better mental health and emotional well-being and lower rates of mental disorders.”
